Abstract
Studies of pop music in film have primarily looked into economic synergy- the effect achieved when the music and the film promote each other. In this thesis I focus on the aesthetic effects of the meeting between pop music and film. By analyzing the use of music in Reservoir Dogs (Quentin Tarantino 1992), Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino 1994) and Trainspotting (Danny Boyle), I attempt to understand how pop music is used in what I term "the 90's film". Through the key terms irony, intertextuality and cool, I discuss the significance of pop music in the aesthetic of this film, and try to discover what terminology is suitable in understanding the role of pop music in the film. Much of pop music's potential as film music, in addition to its 'purely' musical properties, lies in the possibility to manipulate pre-existing associations attached to a particular song, artist or style. The music can, in the encounter with the film, acquire a new sense, and this can work as an ironic commentary to the action in the film. In addition to this, pop music operates as a 'carrier' of cool, and contributes to creating the cool aesthetic of the 90's film.
