Abstract
In this thesis I analyse La isla de la pasión (The Island of Passion) by Laura Restrepo, cementing my argumentative speech, essentially, in theoretical concepts of narratology (Gérard Genette), historiography (Hayden White) and Decolonial Theory (Enrique Dussel, Walter Mignolo and Aníbal Quijano). The objective of the present investigation is to analyse if the novel The Island of Passion (1989), by Laura Restrepo, corresponds to a narrative utopia or a fictional history that have its place in modernity, colonialism and decoloniality in Mexico and Latin America. I investigate how an initial utopia becomes a dystopia, due to its historiographical slope, configured and determined by modernity, colonialism and decoloniality that directly influence, culturally and philosophically the characters of the novel. The thesis is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter, I present the Colombian author Laura Restrepo, her professional career and her literary work. I draw a list of the critical works, as well as the research done on The Island of Passion. Based on the review evaluation of the work, I project my three hypotheses and present the theories applied in this thesis. In the second chapter, I carry out the analysis of the internal literary elements of The Island of Passion, in the light of the postulates of Gérard Genette, supported by some precepts of Oscar Tacca. I place special emphasis on different narrative discourses, on paratextuality and on focalisation. I show how the author Restrepo unfolds in two narrators, one omniscient and another reporter, to weave the central plot and the secondary plot of the novel. I discuss the narrative implication of the paratextuality in The Island of Passion and to what extent it can be determinant. I show how it is possible to differentiate between "point of view" and "focalisation" in the novel, following Genette's argument. Finally, I introduce a divergence with respect to Genette, concerning "space" as a narrative element, which I support with the arguments of another theoretician, Mikhail Bakhtin. In the third chapter, I look for indications of the historiographic discourse in the work of Restrepo, beginning with the story itself and collating the bibliography of the novel. Moreover, thanks to the incorporation, in my analysis, of the theoretical concepts of Hayden White, and his method of deciphering historicity in literary works, I can confirm that the results are unappealable and conclude that the different narrative discourses of The Island of Passion are based on a rich historiographical material and that the narrative structure of Restrepo’s writing contains the four modes that make up a historiographic text: the tropes, the mode of the plot, the argument and the ideological implication. In turn, I make a comparative study between The Island of Passion and three novels of fiction to verify and affirm that both utopia and dystopia have a place in the novel written by Restrepo. In the fourth chapter, I outline the decolonial theory, axis and thread of my research in this thesis. I define a series of decolonial concepts, among which I emphasise: the binomial modernity-coloniality and the coloniality of power. This chapter is the most original contribution of this thesis, as I note that the author Laura Restrepo draws on the decolonial theory to depict a "colonial structure" upon which she put together The island of Passion. This "colonial structure" is perceptible in narrative discourses, in the description of the characters, in the historical background and in the very ideological implication of Laura Restrepo. It is present, both in the historiographical aspect of the novel, as in its fictional side. In the fifth chapter, I present the conclusions of the investigation that I drew.
