The oral cavity and it surrounding tissue are habitats for many bacteria. Therefore a rationale for the use of antibacterial agents rises. During my time as a dental student, me often meet conditions were antibiotics are pointed out as the treatment of chose, as indicated or not recommended. According to Norwegian drug regulations (Tørisen 2007) dentists have: The right to requisition necessary medical agents in connection with dental treatment and prevention and treatment of diseases in the oral cavity or adjacent tissue . The teaching we have had in the field of antibiotics have been scattered between different departments of the Faculty of Dentistry in Oslo.In partial fulfilment of the degree candidata odontologiae a mandatory, approved project must be made and presented. Curious on the background for the rationale and the existing evidence based knowledge of antibiotic use in various conditions this project rose as an opportunity to seek more information. The aim of this paper was to search for existing literature on the field of antibiotics in dental practise.
