Abstract
Abstract
The main objective with this thesis was “to examine key aspects of the current teaching of grammar in English instruction in lower secondary school”. In that connection I examined four different textbooks of English, two from the previous Norwegian national curriculum, and two from the national curriculum currently in use, and I conducted a survey among lower secondary English teachers in Telemark County in Norway in order to examine English teachers’ attitudes towards grammar teaching.
Based upon relevant literature about grammar teaching and the different ways of approaching grammar teaching I drew up the criteria for my research. Using these criteria, I examined the L97 and the LK06 syllabi for references about grammar instruction in school and did a comparison of the two syllabi. I then turned to four textbooks of English for lower secondary school in order to examine how they present grammar. Two English textbooks of the curriculum of 1997 and two English textbooks of our new curriculum, LK06, the “Knowledge Promotion” were used in my analysis. After the textbooks, I carried out a quantitative survey of English teachers in Telemark county of Norway.
My findings from the comparative analysis of the textbooks indicated that the two LK06 textbooks had a stronger emphasis on grammar than the two L97 textbooks, and that there were also differences within the same syllabus. Moreover, the new textbooks showed that they had a more inductive approach in presenting their grammar. While limited to these resources, the results give a representative indication of how different text books on the market present grammar.
The findings from the survey showed that there were differences of opinion about how important grammar is in the teaching of English, but the majority answered that they thought grammar was important when learning a foreign language. My findings also showed that the teaching of grammar often depends on teachers’ attitudes towards it.
In conclusion I will take a look at possibilities for further research and the implications for the teaching of English in Norwegian lower secondary schools in the future. The comparative analysis of the L97 and LK06 textbooks and the survey among teachers of English showed that there has been a change for the better regarding the teaching of grammar. The analysis of syllabi showed that the new syllabus focuses on basic skills and are more focused on the importance of a accurate language. However, I also point out that much depends on the teachers’ attitudes with regard to how the subject should be taught, and how the grammar is presented in the textbooks whether pupils are motivated to learn to write and speak correct English.
