Abstract
This thesis is concerned about Facebook and how youth manage the role situation they are in, when they are participating in an online social network. In order to investigate my object, the study is based on dept interviews of six high-school student about their relation to Facebook, use of Facebook and challenges they meet on Facebook. In the analysis have I systematically worked through the different perspectives regarding their use of Facebook. The findings points to a very careful use of Facebook by the youths, and because of their careful use they handle the challenges of being users of an online social network as Facebook good. It’s shown that the roles we play everyday are recreated online. And that we act in different roles online as well as offline, but the roles are mainly the same online and offline. I have found a paradox regarding the youth’s relation to Facebook. Where they first explain how much they enjoy using and the possibilities that Facebook offers them, and on the other hand has no problem telling that it would be no problem to quit Facebook if they had to. The thesis raise questions regarding new topics to explore, among them is the question if Facebook are creating new premises for childhood and socialization.
