Abstract
This thesis aims to investigate the challenges the public service broadcaster in Norway (NRK) faces in the transitional process for the digitalization of its distribution. I approach this transition period by identifying and analyzing digital strategies of NRK, and by highlighting the changes in its TV-programmes over a four year period, that is to say from 2002-2005.
The main focus of this thesis is to understand the methods which NRK utilised during this transitional phase. The national television channel included experimentation with interactive TV concepts, had an ambition to establish new ways of delivering programmes and search for new sources of funding. The results of my analysis conclude that digital strategies do not necessarily cause a continuos increase of interactive TV programmes. On the other hand, I argue that digital strategies which include new channels, new commercial services and public service broadcaster’s products used for multiple delivery platforms challenge the traditional understanding of what public service is.
