Abstract
In recent years, we have seen an increasing use of Facebook and other social media technologies indicating that network-based communication is converging with- or replacing existing ways of communication in both private and professional contexts. Using qualitative research interviews I try to gather individual experiences from application of Facebook in different work settings. How do the informants experience the use of Facebook in professional settings communicating with an heterogeneous audience consisting of both private and public relations?
The thesis is based on theoretical perspectives viewing strong- and weak social ties, bridging- and bonding social capital and “Context collapse” in interrelation with Facebook use.
Manuell Castells claims that the network society is replacing the industrial society as the epochal characteristics of today, implying that usage of network-structured communication is causing a reorganization of the resources of production leading to the rise of "the network enterprise". This perspective conzeptualizes social media as tools for individual participation in dynamic network-organized workplaces, ultimately replacing the hierarchic organization of work.
Castells perspectives is paired with the results from my research interviews in order to shed light on the presumed forthcoming changes in labor on an individual level.
