This master-thesis is aiming to describe and discuss asceticism as a modern concept. The main research question is: can an ecologically motivated asceticism be comprehended as a relevant and meaningful - but radical – way of life?
The basis for my analysis is the philosophical fundament of respectively deep ecology, feminism and stoic ethics. These three different approaches are all political orientated and communicating a wish - or a motivation - for a change of society.
Modern asceticism can be described as a response; a performance in which a transformative aspect is central. Asceticism can be a response to conditions in society. With this in mind my aim is to analyze the relevance of discussing asceticism in the context of the ecological situation we are facing today.
