Abstract
The topic of the thesis is in-house codes of conduct in Norwegian news media. Three research questions are central to the study: How widespread are in-house codes of conduct? What is the content of the codes? Which functions do they have? The theoretical part of the thesis identifies three perspectives to explain the development and functions of the codes of conduct: the professional perspective, the strategic perspective and the biotopic perspective. The thesis includes a quantitative survey which outlines the extent of codes of conduct in 301 Norwegian news media; a textual analysis of the content of the codes; and two cases and one expert voice who shed light on the developments and functions of the codes. The survey documents another focal point than the general codes. While it is the individual human being who is the focus of the Norwegian Press Association’s Ethical Code of Practice for the Press, it is the journalist and his/her professional role which is the focus of the in-house codes of conduct. This focus point corresponds with the allegedly most important function of the code of conducts, which is to create confidence.
