Abstract
Using the Norwegian SMS-based programme Mess TV as a point of departure, this thesis discusses Horton and Wohl s concept para-social interaction , John B. Thompson s mediated quasi-interaction and Paddy Scannell s for-anyone-as-someone . I argue that these concepts have one crucial premise in common, namely that they assume the television audience to be per se absent. As a consequence, the concepts describe communication to what I have called a general other. Therefore, these concepts do not adequately describe the kind of communicative structures we see in SMS-based television. Furthermore, I argue that the extended role played by audience participation in Mess TV changes the role of the hosts. The relation between hosts and participants, however, cannot be described as egalitarian. In the final chapter I propose three new concepts that I believe are better suited for describing the ways in which the communication is structured in programmes such as Mess TV: for-one, for-some, for-anyone.
