Abstract
This study is an examination and discussion of antagonists traits and functions in contemporary, American action-movies.
It consists of an introductory, quantitative analysis of a selection of action movies screened in Norwegian cinemas in 1997. Examined are, amongst other factors, the antagonists demographics, personal traits, motives and relative placement and functions within the narratives.
This examination is followed by a discussion of how a heterogeneous audience might perceive and interpret these kinds of films and villains. Stress is placed upon how audiences in different ways might sympathise and identify with the characters, and how factors whithin both the movies and audience-groups might contribute to negotiated and oppositional readings. The study is concluded by a more thorough analysis of the movie Face/Off, based partly on the above-mentioned discussion.
