Abstract
This thesis looks at the situation of the printed book in the 1990's, and discusses whether the challenge from the new digital media like the Internet and the CD-ROM represents a serious threat. In the 1990's the situation of the printed book is that it is one of many different types of media, that it interacts with. Various trends have put the printed book into a more differentiated and complex situation, which puts new demands on the partners in the field of book publishing. The digital revolution and the growth of the digital media, is one of the major challenges for the printed book in the 1990's. However, the impact of the digital revolution is far from being exclusively negative for the printed book. It can for instance benefit from the Internet and it is in many ways strengthened by the new digital technology. Interactivity is often said to be a central feature of the new media, and as something unique for the computer as a medium. The last part of the thesis deals both theoretically and practically with the concept of interactivity in an analysis of the Sophie's World CD-ROM. This part also discusses the multimedia situation in Norwegian publishing houses in the 1990's, and shows that they have handled the challenge from the new media in a serious way. We may conclude that the challenge from the new media in the 1990's has not created a crisis for the printed book.
