Abstract
In this master degree I focus on the subject of love in literature, or more
precisely, the romantic love described as a phenomena in literature.
This is done through analysis of two literary works from different centuries; A Lover’s Discourse (Fragments d`un discours amoureux) by Roland Barthes, and it’s principal reference source; The Sorrows of Young Werther (Les Souffrances du jeune Werther) by Goethe. The relationship between these works by Goethe and Barthes are compared as they coincide in Fragments d`un discours amoureux by Barthes. My work contains a semantic and comparative analysis of these two literary productions. Despite their differences in presentation and structure they both represent a romantic vision of love.
I examine various ideologies of love as they may appear in literature, from courtly literature in the XXII century to the end of the twentieth century. After a brief presentation of the above-mentioned texts, I have included an analysis of the introductory texts in the Fragments of Barthes, in which the author states his reasons for writing the book, and how it was written, moving on to an analysis of similarities and dissimilarities between the works of both litterateurs.
To my knowledge,(after research in the Encyclopedia of Otto
Klapp 1977-2009), no such analysis has yet been carried out.
