Resumo:
Este trabalho objetiva descrever e analisar o desenvolvimento semântico do verbo ter, desde as origens da língua portuguesa até os usos polissêmicos e gramaticalizados na linguagem
contemporânea do Brasil. Fundamentamos a pesquisa em teorias da linguística cognitiva, que explicam os processos de gramaticalização e desenvolvimento de polissemias como extensões
metafóricas. Desse modo, os sentidos do verbo ter na linguagem cotidiana se identificam conceptualmente com os do português arcaico por terem se desenvolvido através da cognição humana, sendo produtos das relações entre as conceptualizações no nível mental. Baseamonos
principalmente nos estudos de Lakoff e Johnson (1980), Lakoff (1987), Johnson (1987),Sweetser (1988; 1990), Taylor (1989; 2002), Heine et al. (1991), Heine (1993; 1997), Hopper e Traugott (1993; 2003) e Bybee et al. (1994). A essência desse corpo teórico reside do fato

Abstract:
The present paper pretends to describe and analyze the semantic development of the Portuguese verb ter, considering its wide range of polysemic and grammatical uses in light of the history of the Portuguese language, from its origins until modern Portuguese in Brazil. The research is based on theories from the cognitive linguistics that explain the processes in gramaticalisation and development of polysemic categories as metaphorical extensions. As
such, the meanings of the verb ter in modern Brazilian Portuguese are identified with its uses in the archaic language, by the fact that its evolution depends on human cognition and, in this
manner, is a product of the interrelationship between different mental conceptualizations. As for the works that will be of importance to the present paper we have Lakoff and Johnson
(1980), Lakoff (1987), Johnson (1987), Sweetser (1988; 1990), Taylor (1989; 2002), Heine et al. (1991), Heine (1993; 1997), Hopper and Traugott (1993; 2003) and Bybee et al. (1994). The essence of these theories lies within the fact that language is no more than a symbolic
representation of the mental understanding of the world as it exists. In this manner, the words might represent more than one meaning, so that they develop semantically from a specific and prototypical meaning. Apart from the fact that this process produces metaphorical transfers, it is observed that also the metonymy is a central capacity as for being a connecting element between the different meanings. In discovering a semantic and prototypical centre from the verbs earlier meanings, we pretend to confirm the hypothesis that the existential and auxiliary uses, both in terms of a modal verb and in compound tenses, are metaphorical mappings, diachronically related. As such, the present analysis of the verb ter will search through
evidence throughout the history of the Portuguese language, so that we will be able to study its development in a detailed and clarifying way.
