Abstract
The EC merger regulations and the Guidelines from 2004 both claim that efficiencies shall be acknowledged in the assessment of mergers in the European Union. So far there has been little proof of this, and this thesis attempts to see how they can play a more important role in the future of EC mergers. In doing so, the thesis first defines the three categories of mergers, and how they can impede competition. Second, it goes through the different types of efficiencies that may arise. Third, and finally, it looks on how the assessment of efficiency gains in mergers can be done differently
