With a focus on a particular viewing, the thesis looks at and analyzes the meeting between viewing subject and the film Sound of Metal (Darius Marder, 2019). By using a phenomenological approach as described by Vivian Sobchack, and further developed by Julian Hanich, the thesis aims to examine the functions of the film experience as part of the human experience. Through examples derived from an initial viewing, and subsequent analysis of select scenes, the thesis highlights how the film operates on various levels and what situational factors in the viewing subject’s life that influenced the reception of the film.eng
