In this thesis seven unpublished Greek documents from the papyrus collection of the Oslo University Library are presented. The documents date from the Roman and Byzantine preiods, and include a contract, a fragment from a public register and five letters. Each document is described physically and paleographically, and the Greek text is edited with commentary and translation into English.

Fate in Sophocles' plays.

In this thesis I investigate the concept of sophrosyne (prudence, temperance, self-control etc.) in those Platonic dialogues which are commonly considered to belong to the early or middle period of Plato's career as a writer. My hypothesis is the that there is a closer connection between the different accounts and descriptions of the virtue than is normally thought. My point of departure and the spine of the study is the Charmides, which is devoted as a whole to the question of how to define sophrosyne. In particular, I compare the different definitions proposed in this dialogue with the accounts and descriptions of sophrosyne in the Republic, arguing that most or all of the definitions from the Charmides can be taken to point to essential aspects or conditions of sophrosyne in the magnus opus. While the concept of sophrosyne cannot be separated from Socratic-Platonic philosophy as a whole, the related concepts of love (eros and filia), self and knowledge are especially close associates of our concept; the study therefore tries to pay these notions their due respect. A consequence is that references to the Lysis, the Symposium and the Phaedrus often figure alongside the aforementioned works. On the whole, the study attempts to bring into dialogue the Charmides and the Republic in particular, while drawing heavily on the other works mentioned.

Berge, Robert Emil. From Words to Action: Ambiguity of Speakers and Stage Action in Aristophanes' Comedies. Master thesis, University of Oslo, 2015

The ancient dramatic texts consisted of the words spoken by the characters and nothing else. There were no stage directions and the names of the characters were not written before their lines. This has lead to some problems determining who the speakers are in some passages, especially in comedies. The dramatic texts were written for the purpose of theatre production. Because of the lack of stage directions in the texts and little evidence that the dramatic texts were read as literature by contemporary readers, it can be questioned whether the authors had any reason to include information about the stage action in the texts. There are different positions held towards what kind of texts the ancient dramatic texts should be considered to be. Some hold that the stage action which is not part of the text must be interpolated in order to make sense of the texts. Others are convinced that the texts convey all the necessary information for readers to understand the essential stage action. In most cases the stage action needed to make sense of the drama is given by the text. The many passages where it is difficult or impossible to determine who the speakers are in Aristophanes' comedies, however, could be taken as an argument against treating the dramatic texts as self-sufficient texts. In this thesis I will discuss comments by scholars concerning distribution of text to speakers in Aristophanes' comedies in order to investigate some of the possible approaches to the dramatic texts. I will discuss if the different approaches indicate anything about the hermeneutic status of the dramatic text. I will also conduct an experiment, where I distribute text to speakers in the prologue of Frogs by Aristophanes in order to discover challenges to the position that the stage actions of the dramatic texts can be determined based on the text alone.

Heim, Sofia. Imagining the North: The Hyperboreans and exotic thaumata in epinikian poetry. Master thesis, University of Oslo, 2019

The thesis considers the Hyperborean imagery as an instance of the device of the exotic thauma (wonder-inducing scene or object), which is specific to the genre of the victory ode (epinikion). The study tests the hypothesis that exotic thaumata lend a special kind of freedom to the poet by postulating a geographical domain that, by being removed spatially and temporally, allows the poet a protected form of praise for problematic recipients, such as the laudandi reges (royal honorees), by using and modifying Apolline elements. This hypothesis is tested on three particular victory odes, considered in their historical context. The focus of the discussion will be on the Hyperboreans, the mythical northern ethnos on the fringes of the world, whose presence in the victory odes offers an unusual resource of extravagant praise of dynastic figures. The thesis examines the innovative potential of the Hyperborean thauma: their ‘disruptive’ presence in the epinikia prompts alterations to the established mythical narratives. The thesis includes a presentation of early source material for the Hyperboreans, an analysis of Pindar’s Pythian 10 and Olympian 3, as well as a discussion of Bacchylides’ ode 3.

This thesis uses Lévi-Strauss’ concept of bricolage in order to examine the aesthetic expression of hybridity in Lucian’s oeuvre as a device that allows the author to combine invention with adherence to tradition in his works. I will suggest that the heterogenous audience present at sophistic performances in the Imperial Age, consisting of members of the pepaideumenoi (the highbrow élite) as well as the less sophisticated lower classes, necessitated a “hybrid” approach on the part of the performer which could accommodate the aesthetic preferences of both audience groups. I will further propose that for Lucian’s undertaking to succeed, he had to reject the authority of convention and dogmas, which could potentially undermine his own synthetic show. My hypothesis will be tested on two texts, the prolalia (introductory oration) A Literary Prometheus and the Menippean satire Icaromenippus, and my focus will be on the metapoetic personae of these texts as well as on their associated attributes, sc. Prometheus and clay (πηλός) and Menippus and variegation (ποικιλία) respectively. By including a prolalia and a Menippean satire in the scope of my investigation, I aim to show that though the generic sub-groups of Lucian’s work are often analysed separately by critics, they should in fact be considered as collectively contributing to a distinct kind of Lucianic poetics.
