Den andre gruppen er de syv ’doble’ boksavene, בגד כפרת.

This thesis discusses different strategies for interpreting the placement of the ṭəʿåmim in Masoretic Text of the Hebrew Bible. After introducing the signs and their distribution in the text, the thesis looks at different levels of linguistic analysis where the ṭəʿåmim provide interesting information. At the word level, word stress and vowel length are discussed. At the phrase level, the different types of phrases are analyzed in light of a closest constituent analysis. At the verse level, the distribution of the ṭəʿåmim is shown to depend on simple rules which maximize the most common structures of Tiberian Hebrew. Prosodic structure is also evaluated to show what bearing that it has on the placement of the ṭəʿå̄mīm. Finally, the ṭəʿåmim are discussed in relation to discourse features.
The goal of the thesis is to show that the ṭəʿå̄mīm are not simply musical notation, but have a linguistic basis, and provide insight into linguistic features of Tiberian Hebrew.

Abstract
The background for the project is the elusive character of the classical Hebrew verbal system. In most languages the time in which an action is located is shown in the form of the verb. Such a system is known as tense, in which there is a consistent relation between verbal form and temporal reference. In classical Hebrew this relation is not consistent, and therefore it cannot be explained on the basis of tense. More than one millennium of Hebrew studies has not been able to explain satisfactorily the nature of the verbal forms. One of the reasons for this is a number of assumptions on which most theories have been based. One common assumption is that all languages have tenses. The atemporal behaviour of the Hebrew “tenses” has been attempted explained in various ways by those who defend a tense theory. My analysis uncovers the weaknesses associated with the tense view, and why it should be abandoned. However, most scholars today see the forms as aspects, i.e., as different ways of portraying an action. Most of these theories have serious weaknesses as well. Their meaning has evaded most of those searching for it, much because their functions have been interpreted as their meaning. Other reasons are e.g., the confusion between aspect on one side and tense and Aktionsart on the other. Another assumption is that narrative text is the best place to look for the meaning of the forms. The results of my analysis suggests that this is not the case, and as a result I find that verbs in direct quotation in texts, or direct speech, is a better place to find their meaning. This is because I see direct speech as a more neutral way of expression, not bound by narrative conventions uncovered by my analysis. Using verbs in direct speech in the analysis, I present my own view of the nature of the forms. As many others, I propose an aspectual basis for the classical Hebrew verbal system. The most serious obstacle to a solution of the problem is the misguided interpretation of the so-called consecutive forms. My aspectual theory provides somewhat new definitions of the aspectual values perfective and imperfective, which explain the use of both the free-standing forms as well as the consecutive ones. I propose that the meanings of the latter forms are the opposite of what is usually claimed. The aspectual values, according to my theory, are those of subjective viewpoints, independent of the objective notions of tense and Aktionsart. The consecutive imperfect, usually claimed to be a perfective narrative form, is used to express temporal succession in narrative, not because of its perfectivity, but because of the inceptive value of the imperfective. The consecutive perfect is not, as is claimed, an imperfective form, but a perfective one, motivating its most common use, i.e., that of logical succession.

This thesis looks at the system of verbal stems/diatheses/binyanim in the Semitic languages Akkadian, Gәᶜәz, Amharic, Arabic, Cairene Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Phoenician-Punic. The functions each of the stems can convey (such as the passive, reflexive, causative, factitive etc.) are surveyed and an attempt to reveal an underlying principle that can unite the various functions is made. A theory of prototypical transitivity, i.e. transitivity as a semantic rather than syntactic concept defined by means of a prototype, has been applied and has proven a useful tool in analyzing the verbal stems, and the three parameters of classification within this approach (volition, instigation, and affectedness) have turned out to be powerful means of distinguishing minute nuances between stems.
Initially the formation of verbal predicates in general, and the way participants are associated with them, is discussed. These general sections show that a theory of the binyanim that can account equally well for isolated forms as for rich and intricate interdependencies between several stems formed from the same root is possible if we look for the basic mechanisms that the binyanim encode. Through the analysis it is revealed that these basic mechanisms are for instance the affectedness of the subject, the lack of distinguishability of participants, and the focus on an instigating participant.
It is also found that these basic properties of participants can receive a special focus, and that such focus shifts are another basic function of the binyanim. The difference between a causative and a factitive clause can for example be identified as the former’s focus on the cause’s instigation and the latter’s focus on the causee’s affectedness.

This thesis is examining Modern Hebrew conflict and military terminology – the language of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Described by many Israelis as “a language within the language”, it must necessarily possess an identity of its own through special characteristics. On this basis, the major ambition of this thesis has been to identify the special “fingerprint” of the army speak in Israel – both in regard to technical or grammatical aspects, as well as the practical use of the language. The reader also gets an insight in other various aspects of the language within the military establishment and the security and intelligence community. This includes the current status of the professional language in the armed forces, in regard to efforts made to establish a common strategic, operational and tactical language.
The language of the IDF and its predecessors has developed under almost continuous armed conflicts, starting during the first waves of Jewish immigrants over a century ago. The focus on Hebrew education has been strong due to operational factors, but it has also been a central pillar in the civil-military relations for decades. With limited influence from other languages, the language of the IDF has developed characteristics of its own, compared to the daily Hebrew used in the civil society. The major characteristics found are the extensive use of acronyms, a generous use of slang and, to a less degree, the integration of loanwords. Additionally, there are minor factors, like IDF’s traditional use of numbers and naming of military material.
This thesis claims that the IDF experienced problems with the implementation of a common professional language in the post-modern period of RMA, EBO and network-centric warfare. A part of the reason is the IDF officer education, their non-academic approach in general and dislike of learning material not found in Hebrew. An imprecise and unclear language has led to poor performance in the field, as in the Second Lebanon war in 2006. Today, the IDF have initiated efforts to meet the problems identified. In some areas, like the use of a clear language when issuing orders and coordination between different arms, there are indicators of improvement. In other areas, like the establishment of a common professional language within the IDF, it is far too early to make conclusions, as it is likely to require continuous efforts over a long period of time.

Summary
In this thesis I examine the use of phonological correspondences as a poetic device in the Book of Job. The theoretical framework for the study is the structuralistic theories of poetics developed by Roman Jakobson, as presented in his article “Linguistics and Poetics” (1959), and the theories of phonological parallelism presented by Adele Berlin in her work The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism (1985).
Berlin focuses on what she calls “sound pairs”: a series of consonantal phonemes repeated (in any order within close text proximity) in otherwise parallel text passages. I look for cases of sound pairs in the Book of Job, and I also record other types of phonological correspondences in the text. I argue that these correspondences function as an important poetic device, and that they may have (consciously or unconsciously) influenced the poet’s (or poets’) choices of words and expressions. This may help us understand why certain strange and/or foreign words are used in the book and possibly also why certain emendations have been done.
I further point out the playful aspect of sound as a poetic device, and I view this as a counterweight to the extremely grave content of the text. This “pleasure of play” is moreover on normative grounds pictured as a feminine principle. The feminine part of God and creation is denied and suppressed in all of the Hebrew Bible, and I feel compelled to protest against this injustice in any way possible. The poetic function is an aesthetic phenomenon, and I have pictured this as a woman, bringing life and reprieve to poor Job, in his endless misery.

This thesis presents an edition, translation and grammatical study of three Judaeo-Arabic manuscripts comprising the story Qiṣṣat al-Jumjuma The Story of the Skull , where typical features of the Jewish variety of Arabic, written and spoken in Egypt during the 19th century, are outlined. Special attention is paid to the dichotomy between the substandard varieties Middle Arabic, Non-Standard Cairene and spoken Egyptian Jewish Arabic on one side, and the varieties Standard Arabic and Standard Cairene on the other side. In addition to a number of acknowledged Jewish features attested in the material, new orthographic observations have been made of r as a reflex of emphatic l, e.g. in the spelling of allāh > arrāh God and ᵓiṭṭallaᶜ fī > ᵓiṭṭarraᶜ fī look closely at , never before attested in written form. Qiṣṣat al-Jumjuma was originally written in Arabic, only later to be translated to Judaeo-Arabic. The story is reminiscent of the qiṣaṣ al-ᵓanbiyāᵓ genre, which presents the pre-Islamic prophets from a popular, yet Islamic perspective. The Judaeo-Arabic versions, however, are evidently of Jewish influence, both in terms of narrative and linguistic content. The Judaeo-Arabic language comprises a continuum of Arabic varieties used by Jews living or formerly living in Arabic speaking countries. Their unique sociolinguistic situation makes Judaeo-Arabic relevant to the study of Arabic linguistics, most importantly the history of the Arabic language and its different written and spoken varieties. Written Judaeo-Arabic is closely connected to the substandard spectrum of written varieties called Middle Arabic, incorporating elements of Classical Arabic, dialect, pseudo-corrected features, and the standardization of such features. Because it is written in Aramaic-Hebrew script, it may reveal substandard phonetic, morphologic, lexical and syntactic features, unlike the conventional and strictly established Arabic orthography. This becomes especially evident in cases of close phonetic spelling, which is also the case for the present material.

Abstract The Yom Kippur War in October 1973 led to an American peace effort in the Middle East. From November 1973 to September 1975, the American Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, negotiated between the Israelis, the Egyptians, and the Syrians in a negotiation effort, named step-by-step diplomacy. Kissinger managed to secure two agreements between Israel and Egypt and one agreement between Israel and Syria in this period. This thesis examines the negotiation effort between Israel and Egypt and bases the research primarily on declassified Hebrew language documents from the Israel State Archives (ISA). In order to solidify the agreements, Kissinger was obliged to accommodate the demands of the strongest party, and to make economic inducements to Israel part of the substance of the agreements. It was thereby Kissinger s power of leverage as American secretary of state that assured the success of the diplomacy. The separation of forces agreement, and the interim agreement between Israel and Egypt might be viewed as stepping-stones on the road to the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1979. Nevertheless, Kissinger s step-by-step diplomacy did not advance a comprehensive solution to the Middle East conflict. Except for the positive sanctions, which the Israeli government of Yitzhak Rabin secured as part of the interim agreements, were also assurances from the American President, Gerald Ford, about the conditions for future Israeli-Arab diplomacy on the other fronts. The interim agreement thereby strengthened the strategic Israeli-American relationship and decreased the pressure on Israel for an implementation of UN Security Council resolution 242 for the following years.

The speech of the Sephardic Jews have been defined as both language and dialect, depending always on the standpoint of the analyzer, but is it a language on its own right or is it “just a dialect”? What is, then, the difference between both concepts? In the case Judeo-Spanish could be considered a language, what are the criteria taken into account in the classification? In an attempt to answer these questions I will provide facts on the origin of both terms, their modern and politicized use as well as on the historical vicissitudes of Judeo-Spanish and its speakers. Their literature, both laic and religious, is covered with an emphasis on the most researched and relevant genres, namely: the biblical Sephardic translations, the Romancero and the modern press of the 19th Century. A descriptive presentation of Judeo-Spanish main grammatical features precedes the last chapter, where both the diagnosis of Judeo-Spanish in the 20th Century, and its prognosis for the 21st, are given with the aim of determine its present state.
