Abstract
Since incarceration rates in most of the European countries remain to be relatively high, it has been an ongoing debate as to whether it is possible to achieve reduction in recidivism rates by proper rehabilitation of prisoners. However, the international arena lacks a specific definition of rehabilitation, it is not clear what it should consist of when it comes to prisoners rehabilitation, and the international legal documents do not recognize prisoners’ legal right to rehabilitation as such. Accordingly, the thesis has been dedicated to finding out how the prisoners’ right to rehabilitation is currently understood and interpreted under the European framework, hereby entering into a discussion of what are the prospects and the corresponding challenges of the introduction of prisoners’ right to rehabilitation.
