Abstract
The goal of this thesis was to develop an application facilitating

patient monitoring by providing a roaming monitor that a physician can

carry with him or her at any time. The thesis itself presents an

overview of issues encountered before and during the development of

the application and explains in detail how and why it was developed.

Central topics are embedded software design and implementation and

pattern recognition in medical signals.

In more detail, the thesis addresses some challenges normally

encountered in ICU departments of hospitals, where days are often

hectic and unpredictable and the amounts of information are vast while

the time to process such information is limited. The use of a PDA as a

tool for providing quick access to information is suggested and

explored, and a basic patient monitoring application is developed.

Technical solutions and alternatives are explored and results of the

choises made along with some tests of, and discussions about, what

existing hardware is capable of, are presented.
