Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether nurses participating in interdisciplinary communication-cours according to the Four Habits Model, 4HM, experience increased and lasting skills in communication with patients. The 4HM is based on the fact that by learning concrete skills, health personnel can develop habits for how to best maintain good communication with patients. By using role-play, health personnel get the possibility to understand the patient’s perspective, thereby experiencing themselves the effect of patient-centered communication. This will increase chances of learning, heightened competency, and a lasting change in communication. The studydesign was descriptive cross-sectional and follow-up survey. Data were collected at three measure points. Through anonymous evaluation forms answered immediately before and after attending the course in 2018/2019 (n=157) and online questionnaires 3-24 month after attending 4 Habits Model course, (n=91). Over 85% of the nurses use the communication-method after 4HM-course. The changes becomes a natural part of practice, especially using open questions, listening actively and structure the communication. All four habits seems equally useful. Talking about 4HM in the workplace is important for using the method. Nurses call for repetition/extension of the course. Conclution: Findings from the study indicate that interdisciplinary 4HM communication-courses, lead to nurses increasing their communication skills, change their communication with patients after the course, and this change is lasting.
