This chapter examines ambience as it was defined in Brian Eno's liner notes in Ambient 1: Music for Airports and from John Cage's experiences leaning up to the composition of 4'33'', in regards to the background and the potential sonic landscape it can inhabit. It looks at the importance of the background for our perception of the foreground.
