Do you have an impact on the narrative in video games? This master thesis examines choices and consequences within story-driven video games. The research question addresses which function choices have, and how choices affect the narrative in the video games Heavy Rain (Quantic Dream, 2010), The Walking Dead (Telltale Games, 2012) and Life is Strange (Dontnod Entertainment, 2015). The theoretical framework of the thesis is narrative theory, game studies and moral theory. By the use of textual analysis as the methodical approach, fifteen scenes from the selected video games have been analyzed and discussed to see how choices are presented and which consequences these choices have for the further narratives. The analysis refers to several different narrative elements used in video games and game mechanics that make these interactive. The study reveals different types of choices and the function of choices connected to the degree of impact. The choices analyzed were divided into different degrees of consequences: choices with major consequences, choices with minor consequences, and choices with no consequences. Findings show that these video games mostly contain set events that are central parts of the story, which the player cannot influence. The consequences of most of the choices that the player can influence are linked to minor events, which do not change the story. The function of the choice mechanics may therefore be linked to giving a more personal gaming experience. Heavy Rain and Life is Strange show the greatest degree of possibilities for players to influence the narrative, connected to several alternative endings. The Walking Dead is the video game in this study that contains most set events within the narrative, which shows a low degree of possibilities to influence the narrative.eng
