Abstract
This study investigates various possibilities for the use of graphical notation with amateur choirs (one among serval musical groups with limited knowledge in conventional notation). I have planned and arranged a concert featuring the choir LillCanto in Lillestrøm outside Oslo and analysed their work with graphical notation. I have revealed and developed different tools within graphical notation through analyses of musical works and interdisciplinary investigations of the choir’s attitude and work towards graphical notation. This has led to the creation of some new works that turned out to be possible for an amateur choir to sing prima vista. The new works were performed on the concert, which lead the choir to experience new paths to creativity, the joy of making music and collaboration through music in new ways. The choir also achieved new perspectives on the nature of music. In addition, the choral members’ interest in and understanding of contemporary music seemed to increase.
