Lønnrunene anvendes i liten grad for å sikre sensitiv informasjon. Men lønnrunene hadde andre bruksområder.
One of the conclusions drawn in this study is that cryptography was used as a tool for learning to read and write with runes. In a society where the teaching of writing and reading was not institutionalized, cryptographic systems became a useful tool for learning the order of the futhark as well as the rune-names and shapes. This feature is obvious in jǫtunvillur – a cryptographic system that, while unsuited to communication, is nonetheless a valuable tool for practicing the names of runes and thus their sound values. The use of the term ‘cryptic runes’ (‘lønnruner’) in the field of runology is here reevaluated and, employing a more precise definition partly founded on the concepts of historical cryptology, a variety of writing phenomena traditionally linked to cryptic runes are considered. In this way three permutation systems and eight substitution systems are identified, two of which are new discoveries. A total of 113 inscriptions based on younger Scandinavian runes are associated with the systems and form the basis for examining their underlying principles, as well as the wider use and function of cryptic runes in the Viking and Middle Ages. Cryptic runes were used only marginally to protect sensitive information. We can assume that competent rune-carvers were familiar with several cryptic systems from their own runic education, and that these systems were therefore not particularly exclusive. Cryptic runes had other uses, however. They were frequently carved to demonstrate proficiency in runic knowledge, and were probably used as entertaining challenges in social settings. Several of the systems result in striking visual expressions that could be used to beautify or draw attention to inscriptions. In some inscriptions, cryptic runes seem to have been used to highlight magic messages. Cryptic runes were an integral part of general runic knowledge and their use does not appear to have been especially secret or exclusive.eng
