Abstract
Masteroppgaven undersøker hvordan LHBTQ representeres i dataspill.
The dissertation investigates how LGBTQ are represented in video games. The video game industry and gaming culture are male dominated and characterized by a masculine hegemony. While LGBTQ have been widely represented in TV-series and movies for several years, the video game industry just recently started to include LGBTQ content in a meaningful way. In a critical textual analysis of nine characters identified as LGBTQ from different games, I’m investigating how the characters are represented through character design and storytelling. A common factor among the characters is that they found acceptance for their sexuality and gender identity in groups who are in opposition to society, be it outlaws or protest groups. The thesis reveals that the LGBTQ representation happens on heteronormative premises. All though the LGBTQ representation mainly avoids stereotypes and harmful tropes connected to gender and sexuality, the characters adapt heteronormative performances of gender and sexuality. This leads to a silencing of the parts of the LGBTQ community that challenges the heteronormative performances of gender and sexuality.
