Abstract
Background: This study aims to determine how General Practitioner (GP) doctors understand, explains and relates to patients use of Acupuncture. Methods: The empirical foundation of this study is qualitative interviews of 10 GPs. The interviews aim to let the GPs share and reflect on their experiences with patients use of acupuncture. Results: This study analyse the GPs understanding and definition of Acupuncture in the framework of Bourdieu's field analysis. The interviews reveal that Acupuncture may be defined as a independently field, not as a part of other alternative medicine disciplines, and can operate complementarily to the power medicinal field. Conclusion: The findings show that the GPs communicate and relate differently to patients using acupunctural treatments. Bourdieu's field analysis makes it possible to analyze the two forms of communication categories. "Traditional" GPs lets the patient inform them about acupunctural treatments. "Bridge building" GPs, on the other hand, asks and informs patients about acupuncture and actively recommends it as a complementary treatment.
