Abstract
Abstract The goal of this study is to examine how the parents of individuals with a substance addiction experience the first-line services of the public health sector for substance addicts. This is a quantitative study basing itself on the semi-structured interviews of four parents. The study’s design is explorative as well as descriptive; and the chosen approach is phenomenological, given that the research question centers on the content of subjective experiences. The study suggests that the parents’ encounter with the first-line services of the public health sector for substance addicts is a result of complex processes involving the role of parent, the system at large and the social environment. The analytic process, inspired by Malterud’s method of systematic text condensation, resulted in five codes that were further divided into five sub-categories and two main themes. The main themes were firstly stress and secondly information. Essentially, the depictions of the parents point at a solitary existence, in which cooperative initiatives from those who represent the public health sector are sorely missed. The life of a parent of a substance abuser is marked by uncertainty and extensive carer tasks. This, in turn, represents a burden to the very lives and health of the parents, in which the use of a number of coping strategies has played a role in avoiding serious illness. The inclusion and better understanding of parents are key components in a public health perspective.
