Abstract
The master's thesis presents different perspectives on the application of condition surveys in archives. The thesis is in particular studying the technique called Preservation Assessment Survey (PAS), and its advantages and disadvantages as a basis for developing preventive conservation plans for archival institutions. The main question asked is this: «Do the results of PAS offer a good basis for working with preventive conservation measures?» The results and conclusions are based on analyses of PAS survey scores in seven archival institutions, and interviews with senior personnel in these institutions. The results show that the use of condition analyses in one form or another can be a good tool in the management of large amounts of objects. The conclusion is that the application of a condition survey has led to the necessary change of strategy in conservation work in the archives. It has also led to a conviction that the method for assessment surveys called PAS, is not sufficiently adapted to archival institutions and that it falls short of having the necessary credibility.
