Abstract
The uneven gender balance in the Norwegian music industry has been in focus for a long time, and the theme is discussed in mass media year after year. But how do female pop artists nowadays feel about being women in the music industry? This is what I inquire in the thesis. Through qualitative scientific interviews with six topical female popartists I got insight in how their work day as an artist is, and how they are treated as women. In this study I take a closer look at, and discuss, themes like gender discrimination, focus on appearance and image, gender stereotypes in the music industry, and the reason for this. The goal of the thesis is to focus on the woman’s work day as an artist in the music industry, as well as forming a basis for a survey on what it is like being a woman and an artist in the Norwegian music industry in the period 2010-2015.
