Abstract
With permission from the Regional Ethics Committee we identified all patients over the age of 18 admitted to the ICU of Akershus University Hospital with a primary diagnosis of pneumonia and requiring invasive assisted ventilation for more than 24 hours. The data were collected between 1 January 1997 and 31 December 2006. From their medical records we collected data on sex, age, duration of ICU and hospital stay, duration of mechanical ventilation, SAPSII score, comorbidity, ICU and hospital mortality. For patients discharged alive, time of death was collected from the National Registry. Cause of death was also investigated, as well as microbiological findings (data not presented in this student report). Temporary data show a total 5-year mortality rate of 58,5 %. In an article planned for publishing in 2016, we will also report on preexisting comorbidity as a risk factor for mortality. Microbiological data may be presented in a separate article. My role in the project has primarily been searching for literature, data collection, authoring an abstract, and participating in revisions of the final manuscript/s.
