Abstract
This thesis deals with the high-rise building in the Government Administration Complex in Oslo, the integrated art sandblasted into its concrete walls, and the close cooperation between the architect, Erling Viksjø, and five contemporary Norwegian artists. The artists were commissioned to design and execute mural decorations in the main lobby and the staircase walls. Drawings by Pablo Picasso are also sandblasted into the walls of the stairwell. The thesis describes how Viksjø s development as an architect is linked to the debate on monumentality and the synthesis of the arts promoted by Le Corbusier et al., and discusses whether this building can be described as a Gesamtkustwerk.
