Abstract
I explore in this thesis the possibility for a comparative analysis between Freud s theory of the human psyche and the concept of the soul (nafs) in the Islamic tradition. In order to assess the credibility of my analysis, I use a descriptive approach to relevant works by Freud and two thinkers from the Islamic tradition. By doing this I show how Freud and the two Islamic thinkers understand and conceptualize the psyche and the soul, respectively. These deliberations and theories are then analyzed through a comparative perspective in order to evaluate whether there are similarities between these two concepts. In relation to Freud, I trace his theoretical development regarding the psyche through several of his works, which culminates in his structural theory of the mind, consisting of an id, ego and super-ego. These psychological concepts are seen by Freud as institutions of the mind, where the ego is perceived as what can roughly be understood as the self. Regarding the Islamic tradition and the concept of the soul, I analyze the writings of the medieval thinker Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali and the messianic thinker Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. Here I account for their thoughts and views regarding different aspects of the nafs (soul) and its relation to the human being. Both of these two thinkers discuss the concept of soul in the Islamic tradition, as it appears in the Qur an. The soul is seen primarily as consisting of three different stages, these being al-nafs la-ammara bi-l-su, al-nafs al-lawwama and al-nafs al-mutma inna. These different stages of the soul can respectively be understood as the lower soul, the conscious soul and the soul at peace. My basic hypothesis which I try to examine in this thesis is whether the different explanations given of the soul and the psyche, as understood by these two Islamic thinkers and Freud, refers to the same internal processes in the human being. An illustrative example can be seen in the phenomenon bad conscience; Freud explains this as the result of a conflict between id and super-ego, but which is experienced by the ego. In relation to the soul, bad conscience is described as happening at the spiritual stage of al-nafs al-lawwama, where the soul is conscious of the difference between a right and a wrong. The thesis will not try to answer these questions epistemologically, but tentatively through a descriptive comparative analysis.
