This thesis presents a qualitative study of how pre-school children experience media content, focusing on small children s reception of stereotypical and counter-stereotypical content shown on television. The thesis analysis consists of a textual analysis of a selection of clip sequences from NRK Super, I then observed the of children during a viewing of the sequences as well as three focus group interviews. The empirical findings show that the children s television programmes draw both stereotypical and a counter-stereotypical pictures of girls and boys, and gender construction takes place both through symbols, as well as in the action and dialogue. I found that the degree of fascination and identification with the characters and activities taking place during the sequences form the basis of the children s reception of media content. The study show that children know about gender and gender roles, and especially the boys display these stereotypically. At the same time I can see that the children are not aware that they possess these views of gender, and that they relate to the portrayals of gender presented on children s television programmes by making associations to real life.eng
