Abstract
During the Middle Ages in Norway, the church used different approaches to learn the lay people about sin, death and the life in the hereafter. Homilies, visions and imaging applications were used to communicate with the population about to live a good Christian life, to follow Christian rites and norms, and to ensure for a good life after death. In the 12th and 13th century changes in the theology and sacraments, made varieties in the life after death. This changed the mentality of the laity.
In this thesis I have researched how the population, from that period, looked at the idea of sin, death and the life in the hereafter. How the communication between the church and the laity has also been investigated, to find out the mentality of the population, and how it changed during the Middle Ages in Norway.
