dc.description.abstract | Rappartisten Nas (Nasir Jones) ga i 1994 ut sitt debutalbum Illmatic. | nor |
dc.description.abstract | In 1994, rap artist Nas (Nasir Jones) released his debut album Illmatic. The song lyrics from the album conveyed stories about the African American youth's challenging everyday life in the suburbs of New York in the 1980 - and 1990's. Through an enlightening and uplifting rhetoric, Nas communicated a desire to improve this situation, and Illmatic remaines a milestone within what critics and supporters refer to as conscious rap. Taking on an historical approach, this essay aims to uncover the characteristics of conscious rap, and to discuss the extent to which Nas relates to this genre. The purpose of the historical retrospect is to investigate how four centuries of African American struggle for equal rights on the one hand, and their rich culture on the other, has influenced the phenomenon of hip-hop in general, and on the political agenda in the genre of conscious rap in particular. Focusing on language and rhetorics, this essay seeks to unveil how Nas relates to conscious rap by analyzing three songs from different periods in his discography. It also discusses Nas' authority and authenticity as a social critic, and whether these qualities have been subject to change throughout his career. | eng |
