Abstract
Summary
Purpose: The aim for this study is to look at parents own stories about caring for a disabled child. What are they telling us about when they write about their lives and their children? I wanted to give a broader understanding of these stories about having a child with a disability by using their own narratives. What issues are they raising, how can we understand these narratives and what kind of knowledge are they giving us?
Theoretical framework: I refer to Lazarus and Folkman’s model for understanding stress and coping. I also use Bandura’s social cognitive theory and his term self –efficacy. To give and understanding of what circumstances these stories are written in, I give a brief introduction to how we can understand disability and how this term is defined and used in Norway. I am also giving a picture of how we can understand the welfare system in Norway and how this system can influence on being a parent for a child with a disability.
Method: The empirical data is six stories written by parents caring for a child with a disability. I am using a qualitative method in a hermeneutic perspective. The analysis is inspired by narrative methods used in social science and literature science with the main focus in social science.
Results: When parents tell their own story about having a child with a disability their main focus is how they resolve challenges they meet in their struggle with the authorities. By using theory discussing coping I show that the parents in this study use problem-focused coping strategies while emotion-focused and meaning focused strategies are less visible. The parents in this study are not focusing on other issues like grief and bad health which the literatures in this area often discuss.
Conclusion: When parents tell their own story, they focus on how to solve problems in contact with the authorities. The stories are published in a book aimed to help other parents in a similar situation and this is an important consideration when I have analyzed this texts. I have been inspired by literature science and by using these methods and theory on coping I have shown how we can understand these parental narratives. This study also give a contribution to the research arguing for including perspectives on modern parenthood in theories about parenting disabled children.
