dc.description.abstract | Abstract
Background. Every year many Norwegian children get diagnosed with cancer. When a family member gets sick, the whole family gets involved, including the healthy siblings.
Objective. The aim of this study is to investigate the subject children as relatives, especially siblings of children with cancer. Trough a literature review I want to study 1) Siblings thoughts and feelings, 2) The problems siblings’ experience, 3) The different effects it provides, and 4) What interventions can improve the situation.
Method. A literature search on PubMed with the terms “cancer AND children AND siblings” was performed 1.9.12. It resulted in 631 publications. All abstract were considered. 30 publications were chosen and read through.
Results. The literature describes many negative effects on the healthy siblings when a child is diagnosed with serious illness. Several studies show negative feelings, behavior- and adjustment problems, changes in school achievement and physical problems. Not all siblings experience problems. Some even experience positive effects, such as increased maturity, independence, increased responsibility, closer family relationships and increased ability to appreciate life. Different interventions have been tested to improve sibling’s situation, such as support groups and camp experiences.
Conclusion. A sick child may represent a major stress for the healthy children. Children react differently, and it is important to identify the sibling’s individual needs, to support them, give information and let the children participate. There is weak evidence for suggesting some interventions that could improve the situation. Further research is required to provide a clear conclusion on whether specific interventions are effective or not. | eng |
