Abstract
This thesis looks at the NATO discourse in three Russian newspapers in the period between 2004 and 2010. It analyzes some of the main perspectives on NATO in an attempt to gain a better understanding of Russian views on the alliance. The analysis show that while some perspectives on the alliance are rooted back to the time of the Cold War, others are the result of important events in the Russia-NATO relationship that happened within the period of the analysis. The analysis also shows that despite the lack of press freedom in Russia, the debate about NATO in the three chosen papers: Rossiskaya Gazeta, Nezavisimaya Gazeta and Novaya Gazeta, displays a range of perspectives on both the alliance and on the how the Russian government deals with NATO matters.
