In the context of an ongoing global financial crisis and as a result of personal interest in psychiatry, it seemed interesting and important to investigate on the origin of the word crisis , to be able to have a more qualified say on whether the term today is used appropriate or not. This is done by trying to track its way through history, investigating on the term fever as well as crisis, knowing that crisis has been an important medical term when describing diseases of fever. We have looked at modern web based dictionaries as well as the old writings from Hypocrite, and we have tried to find references as old as possible in the Norwegian language by reading articles on fever in old Nordic encyclopaedias dating from the 19th century. We found that the meaning of crisis in Norway at that time was well preserved from the time of Hippocrates. The crisis symbolised a significant change, a turning point, and the possibility of getting well. The term seems to have an origin in the Norwegian language as a medical term, and has later embodied new meanings. Asking why and when it disappeared from clinical practice, and presuming it was related to the introduction of antibiotics in the treatment of infections, I have tried to analyse medical textbooks written in Norwegian, doing so by focusing on editions released before and after the emergence of antibiotics. I have also looked briefly into English textbooks from the same period. My conclusion is that crisis as a term no longer is in the hands of medical professionals, at least in Norway, and that this in some degree ought to be changed, to the better of public health.eng
