I wanted to generate more knowledge about suicide methods in relation to gender, age and geography.
Material and methods:
The material consists of 340 cases of suicide (F-Y 3300) and suicide suspected (F-Y 3550) examined at the Department of Forensic Medicine of the University of Oslo,during the period from 01.01.2000-31.12. 2001. Sources of information were the forensic autopsy reports.
The suicide material from year 2000-2001 consisted of 340 individuals,228 males and 112 females. Male - female ratio 2,03:1.
The most frequently suicide method among the women in 2000-2001 was intoxication followed by hanging / strangulation.
The most frequently suicide method among the men in 2000-2001 was violent death, followed by hanging /strangulation.
The rank of age groups in relation to suicidal rate in 2000-2001 was:
1. Age 30-60
2. Age 15-29
3. Age 61 +
The distribution between the cities and the countryside was:
102 in the country
238 in the city
The city-countryside ratio was 2,33 :1
The majority of suicides in 2000/2001 in this material were committed in the city.
The distribution of suicide methods varies with factors as gender, age and geography in this material.
