Our main subject with this study was to observe and evaluate how the health clinics in Tanzania follow the national guidelines for antenatal care. During a 6 week period in the summer of 2003 we visited four antenatal clinics in Moshi town, Kilimanjaro region. We performed the study through observation and participating in the daily routines and data collection from registration books and delivery books. Background information and theory was found in literature and search in PubMed.
The general impression of the health personal performing the antenatal controls was impressive. They showed good knowledge and great experience, despite limited resources. The lack of equipment is the main reason why the national guidelines are not satisfactory followed. Improvement could easily be done by getting urine sticks, Hb measurement, tests for blood typing, syphilis and HIV.
