Background: Medical abortion has through the last years been the most common method for termination of pregnancy before the 12th week, but there are no existing statistics about the number of women who do the medical abortion at home and what abortion methods the Norwegian hospitals offer the women asking for termination of pregnancy.
Methods: We have analyzed termination of pregnancy in our clinic through the last 11 years, both the numbers and the methods. In addition, a questionnaire related to abortion methods was sent to the head of all gynecologic departments in Norway.
Results: The number of surgical abortions has been halved through the last 11 years in our clinic, and medical abortion at home is now the main method and accounts for 48% of all termination of pregnancy. In other hospitals in Norway, medical abortion is also the most common method, but only half of the hospitals offered medical abortion at home as an opportunity.
Interpretation: There are good treatment opportunities for women asking for termination of pregnancy in Norway, but there are differences between the hospitals. Medical abortion at home should be the standard treatment in termination of pregnancy, at least before the 9th week.
