Abstract

Background Ferdighetssenteret (The Skill Centre) at Rikshospitalet needed a tool to teach pediatric skills to the students at The University of Oslo (UiO). The centre had already made two educational videos, and wished to make them more accessible. The task consisted of both technical and medical challenges. On the technical side, the videos would have to be edited and an internet site designed and programmed. At the same time the content of the site had to cohere with generally approved medical knowledge and practice.

Material and methods We used four different pediatric books and a host of online resources as the base for our content. With the help from our tutors we have controlled that the text is in line with general guidelines. The videos where split into smaller segments, tagged with useful notes and reformatted into a format more compatible with online streaming. The site was designed and programmed with both esthetical and educational concerns in mind. A major feature is the built-in ability to edit and post texts, pictures and videos.

Results Barnehelsesiden.no contains texts, pictures and videos. The site has evolved itself into a full born multimedia teaching tool for both students and elder colleagues wishing to update their knowledge. The built-in feature for updating the content will ensure the Skill Centre full control.

Conclusions The task at hand was to make the initial educational videos more accessible. We have achieved this and have made a website with the ability to incorporate future videos and material produced by the Skill Centre.
