Based on the technological development, many institutions of higher education have reformed their existing educational models to include new technical solutions. We have developed an interactive, internet-based learning-program for histology, Interactive Histology, as a supplement to the traditional histology-education in the second semester of medical school at the University of Oslo. Our aim was to develop a product, which would give the students a fast and easy way to get to know the most important tissue types and structures. We also wanted to increase the availability of images from the electron microscope and give the students an opportunity to tests their skills through interactive puzzles. At the end of the semester, the project was evaluated by means of a questionnaire. Interactive Histology is publicly available at no costs at http://start.at/histologi. This article describes the development and evaluation of Interactive Histology.
