Background and aims: There are currently no teaching resources in standardized clinical abdominal examination in Norwegian easily accessible on the Internet. Our aims were (1) to establish a suitable and easily updatable web based teaching resource in clinical examination, and (2) to deliver the content for the section on abdominal examination.
Methods and results: Literature and Internet resources were reviewed, and advice was obtained from physicians and computer technology professionals. A website was set up using MediaWiki open access software, which provides easy editing, administation and updates. We recorded a movie where Professor Lars Aabakken demonstrated abdominal examination. To illustrate clinical findings, pictures were taken from patients after obtaining written, informed consent from the patients and approval from the Privacy Ombudsman at Rikshospitalet University Hospital. Finally, we wrote an article published in the Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association1, describing the project. The resource was made freely available on the Internet at the following location:
Doctors who evaluated the resource concluded that the content was good and the resource useful. Fourteen students evaluated the resource by filling out an anonymous form, and all replied that the resource was useful and that they would recommend it to other medical students.
Conclusion: The resource is already in use among medical students and should be a useful adjunct to ordinary classes in clinical examination. Further plans include completing the teaching resource for the remaining fields in clinical examination.
