Today, parents spend most of the time with the child while it is in hospital. This makes great demands on both the parents and the nurses. Understanding both the child and its parents and the whole situation of the family is essential in paediatric nursing. The intention: was to describe the experiences of parents when their child was in the paediatric ward. "The rights of children in hospital",( Forskrift om barn på sykehus), is used as a basis for a way of presenting the problem. To limit the task, the paragraphs concerning the parents' right to relief when needed, and the duty of staff to clarify their tasks to parents , is the basis of the interview guide. Design: A qualitative research method was used. Data was collected by interviewing eight parents, four mothers and four fathers in two different hospitals/paediatric wards in Norway. The data basis was analysed according to Kvales' analytical method: "Self- Understanding", "common sense" understanding and theoretical understanding. Kari Martinsen and Joyce Travelbee form the theoretical frame of discussions. Results: As background for their experiences the parents had an average of approximately 13 hospitalizations, lasting form one day to several weeks over a period of four months to five years. The results of the study seems to indicate that the parents appreciate to be with the sick child. They are prepared to do everyday care (feeding, bathing etc.) for the child .The parents wants the nurse to take more initiative concerning relief and to clarify their roles. The results indicate that the parents miss the opportunity to talk with the nurses about their situation, they wish that it was part of the routine. The parents feel that the nurses have a strong pressure of work. They try to spare the nurses by not asking for relief in any considerable degree and rather solve these needs on their own. Concerning medication, the parents feel unconfortable and unsafe when they feel they have to share this responsibility with the nurses. The parents must feel secure that the nurse takes proper care of the child to be willing to leave their child to meet their own needs for relief. Siblings must be subject to special care when a child is sick and in and out of hospital for a period of time. Conclusion: The results indicates that even if the parents in many ways are satisfied with being able to be with their sick child in hospital, and that their experience most often is that the nurses are doing their best, the nurses must have a more open dialogue with the parents and not expect that the parents themselves take initiative and ask for help and support.eng
