Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the information needs of patients undergoing thrombolytic therapy as part of stroke recovery. The intention was to improve the quality of guidance and medical care in the stroke unit.
Literature Review: The study was based on literature and research within the topics of patient information and patient experience, stroke and thrombolytic therapy, and the nurse's educational function.
Method: Qualitative descriptive designs were applied, through semi structured in-depth interviews with seven respondents 2-5 weeks after they were discharged from the stroke unit. The analysis applied qualitative content analysis based on Malterud (2008) and Granheim and Lundman (2004).
Results: In the analytic process, four main themes emerged. These topics were important for the informants' needs for information during the thrombolytic therapy. The first topic concerned the content of the information that the patients and their families received throughout the process, from they were admitted until they were discharged. It also encompassed their need for and satisfaction with the information they were given. The second topic describes the informants' experience of being admitted with stroke, and how they experienced the thrombolytic therapy. The third topic describes the informants' impressions of meeting the stroke unit and hospital staff. The last topic describes the informants' own reflections on their situation, concerns they have, and the chaos they experienced as stroke patients.
Conclusion: The study indicates that patients who received the thrombolytic therapy, perceived the treatment as a good experience. Informants felt well taken care of by the staff and well informed regarding their treatment. However: they expressed a need for more information about the administered medication as well as concerning their future in general.
