Abstract
Michael Moore’s filmes have received much critical attention and are considered controversial. A main reason for the criticism is the way Moore presents and structures his statements. This thesis takes a closer look at some of the argumentative devices and strategies used by Moore, and the effect they have on the audience’s reception of his arguments. The thesis uses relevant documentary film theory to examine this, as well as other perspectives. Some aspects of the films are related to fiction film, such as a narrative structure and the assignation of metaphorical roles to the actors of the films. The thesis also looks closer at how Moore appeals to the emotions of his audience as an argumentative strategy, especially how he uses aspects of the narrator’s voice and the selection of music to further his message. The effects of humorous and serious tones in the argument are also examined. Finally, Moore’s interview strategies and how choice of strategy affects the message of the films are discussed. In connection with this, some of the ethical issues connected with documentary production are discussed in relation to Moore’s films.
