Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a phenomenon originated in the USA that recently has spread across the global business environment. The pillar for this thesis is that CSR has become a global idea which multinational companies need to address. Through a qualitative content analysis and by analyzing six companies’ presentation of their CSR-efforts, this thesis seeks to find the differences between multinational companies’ interpretations of CSR. The companies derive from three nationalities, and work within two different business sectors, composed of USA, Great Britain, Norway, Oil & Gas and Telecommunication respectively. All together, the empirical findings of the thesis show a rather similar approach, especially within the industries, indicating that the global aspects of CSR are present. There is however a clear distinction between the sectors as to the meaning the companies apply to CSR, which shows that the companies are forced to address certain, global demands that are directly tied to their impact on society, and accordingly response within accepted socially accepted norms. It will be argued that the national differences are apparent in regards to how the companies approach CSR as a phenomenon. An important finding is that the Norwegian companies communicate less about their CSR-efforts, and that the American companies ties CSR more directly to their philanthropic initiatives and as an integrated part of their business. The results show that national business-systems sets the frame for the way companies interpret CSR, viewed as a global concept.eng
